The “River House” proved to be, both, a challenging and most rewarding project for the talented staff at embee & son. The objective was to design a functional kitchen which incorporated the existing features; a cathedral ceiling, exposed beams and wall of windows with a panoramic view of the river. In addition, the kitchen was open to the living room, dining area and a small breakfast room.
Our clients had already met with an architect who revised the floor plan and turned the breakfast room into a study/guest room and, through the addition of a wall, created a large walk in pantry in the back of the kitchen. Our designer, Vicki Collazo, tweaked the floor plan by removing a section of the wall to the back hall. This allowed us to fulfill the client’s wishes for a 36” cook top, 2 islands, a coffee station, and a wet bar with a wine refrigerator. It was imperative the islands be designed to allow the seated guests and whoever worked at the sink to face the view. The initial design, by the client’s request, was for semi-circular islands. After exhausting several design options, it was agreed two bat wing islands would provide the necessary work space and optimal views for all.
The finishes in the kitchen had to balance with the organic materials in the existing open floor plan. We wanted each element to add color and texture without overpowering the room. Mid Continent Cabinetry, a semi-custom line, was selected in two finishes; Stone with black glaze on maple for the perimeter and Slate with black glaze on cherry for the islands. The counter tops on the perimeter are quartz (Fieldstone by Cambria) and the islands are granite (Labradorite Bianco). A slate, glass and stainless steel tile on the back splash complements the appliances as well as the warm and cool grey tones used throughout the design.
The finishing touches are the custom barn doors. A local saw mill provided the aged wood which is the same species as the existing beams. The doors and fixed panels were built to our specifications and custom glass panels were installed. A murphy bed in the study provides a place for overnight guests and folds out of sight when not in use.
Our staff enjoyed working with our clients and everyone involved in making this project come to fruition.
