FOR YOUR HOME: Choosing a Paint Color

October 16th, 2015      Leave a comment

Choosing A Paint Color For Your Home

Choosing a paint color for the walls of your home can seem like a very daunting task! Most homeowners usually don’t know where to begin. Like many others, you want to ensure you’re choosing the right colors that will coordinate with adjoining rooms or with interior and/or exterior surfaces. We are here to help guide you with options to consider.

We all have a favorite accessory in our homes such as a rug, throw pillow, plate, chair or painting. Use this treasure as a starting point for your color selections. The combinations in these items will guide you in choosing colors that appeal to your senses and your mood. Check the color wheel to discover how colors work together.

A good way to get started is to choose a small area in your home to experiment. Such as a powder room, hallway, or an area between rooms. Choose a smaller square footage to paint will allow you to see results faster. You can then decide if you’re pleased with the color or if you want to change it.

Be sure to pay attention to the lighting in the room or area you are painting. Natural light will have either a warm or cool cast depending on the direction the room faces. Rooms facing north and east will have a cool cast while rooms facing south and west will have a warm cast. In addition to natural light, incandescent light will make the color appear warmer and fluorescent light will make the color appear cooler. Always test paint samples in the brightest and darkest areas of the room to see how the light in your home will affect the color throughout the day.

Look at your walls as planes of color. Walk into an adjacent room and then walk back into the room you are painting. View the two rooms like a composition because you are going to see pieces of adjoining rooms and you want to make sure they coordinate instead of clash with each other. For a smooth transition between rooms try choosing a color for one room and paint the adjoining room a shade lighter or a shade darker by using tones from the same color family listed on the sample color chip.

Choosing Paint Color Collage Photo

You can also change the appearance of a room’s size with color. If you choose lighter colors you will make the room appear larger, if you choose darker colors you will make the room appear smaller. If you are painting for resale of your home, you may want to be safe and choose neutral colors. They blend the best with other accent colors in accessories. Neutrals are considered safe choices. It helps potential buyers to visualize their belongings in the space much easier.

Thinking about a new Kitchen Faucet?

March 3rd, 2015      Leave a comment

Whether you are looking to simple update your kitchen, doing a total kitchen remodeling project, or replacing an old leaky kitchen faucet, choosing a new faucet can be a lot to do.

It’s not just a simple decision anymore. With all the features such as the finish, the number of handles, or pulling the faucet out or down, it can be overwhelming to say the least!

embee & son is here to help you with things to consider before buying a new kitchen faucet. We hope these 5 things can help you with your options before you even leave the comfort of your home.

Delta Allora Kitchen Faucet

  1.  What is your style?
When you start shopping, it’s good to know what is your style and the style of your kitchen. Look for shape, design, and lines that reflect it. For example,
  1.  What are your uses?
Are your large pots and pans constantly filling up the sink? Then maybe a faucet with an arched neck might be the right choice. Do you wash most of your dishes with the faucet or do you mainly use it for rinsing?
  1.  Is a sprayer a necessity?
This question addresses mainly the functionality of the faucet. Keep in mind how you are using the faucet will help in the decision if you should chose a multi-function spray faucet, a side sprayer, or no sprayer at all.Kohler Faucet
  1.  How many handles do you like?
One handle will allow you to adjust the water temperature and the amount of flow with a single motion while two handles will allow you to mix the hot and cold water.
  1.  How many holes are in your existing sink?
Keep in mind what is already in your kitchen unless you are doing a remodel with a new sink. Knowing how many holes your current faucet has will determine your search a bit more. Keep in mind many manufacturers offer optional deck plates so if you currently have 3 holes and want a single hole faucet, you could cover it up if that is the look you want.

Come visit our showroom and our talented staff can let you touch, feel and help you choose your new kitchen faucet.

Flooring Trends: Rustic and Distressed Wood Gaining In Popularity

October 24th, 2014      Leave a comment

You know you’ve seen it. The shows on television that focus on makeovers and renovations. And many of these shows are featuring rustic and distressed wood-look flooring styles for these projects. There’s a reason for that. They are unique, practical and affordable. A good portion of consumers don’t want the nicks, dents and scratches that are inherently present when having a true hardwood floor. It takes diligence and dedication to take care of a true hardwood floor. With today’s busy lifestyle for families it just makes sense to choose a more durable, highly scratch resistant option.

Mannington – Adura Distinctive LVP – Avalon

What will give these floors their distinctive reclaimed and rustic looks is the unique machine scraping and the state-of-the-art staining processes. This will give the category of rustic and distressed wood-look flooring it’s appeal. Handscraped styles in the lighter patterns and the wood species have been very popular. Even beginning the takeover in popularity compared to the darker, more traditional patterns. But no matter what the color, consumers are still going to desire texture in their flooring giving the room more character.

We have a consultation with our customers from the start of their flooring project to the end about their needs, how they live and if this look fits their lifestyle. We have several different manufactures from which to choose a rustic and distressed wood-look floor. Providing our customers with a large choice from which to decide. We encourage our customers to take home samples and evaluate which choice is best for their room.

Caring for your new Granite Countertops

October 2nd, 2014      Leave a comment

Granite is a very popular choice for new countertops in kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling. However, not everyone knows how to properly care for Granite. So, we at embee & son thought a blog to address this would be appropriate.

Granite countertops really don’t take much care. Really.

All of the Granite installed in our jobs is treated with a product called “Drytreat”. This production is an impregnating sealer that is technologically different from other sealers such as silicone, Teflon, and siloxane. It penetrates deeper into the porous surface of Granite and bonds permanently inside the pores. It protects against staining, cleaning chemicals, traffic, sunlight, and creates a deep barrier. Drytreat carries a warranty of up to 25 years when the sealer is applied by a Drytreat Accredited Applicator.

Performing daily maintenance is the best care for the countertop.

Simply clean the countertop with warm water and a few drops of dishwashing detergent and a soft cloth. Use clean water and a dry, soft cloth to rinse. Keeping the stone surface clean ensures it’s always easier to clean when there are spills.

Man Cleaning Countertop

Granite Countertops can stain if not sealed.

Red wine and acidic foods are the top offenders to the life of Granite. Wipe up any spills immediately with a sponge and water.

It’s best to prevent long term exposure to extremes in temperature.

While hot cooking pans and pots will not do any surface damage, it’s not advisable to have extreme or constant temperature changes. Leaving a hot pan on the Granite for long periods during colder winter months is an example.

Granite Countertops should not be cleaned with any acidic cleaning products.

This includes vinegar-based cleaners, ammonia, lemon or orange cleaners, bleach and any abrasive cleansing powders or pads.

While Granite is very resistant to scratching, cutting directly on Granite will damage your knives.

You should always use a cutting board regardless of countertop material. Also use mats or trivets under any objects that could potentially scratch, such as ceramic objects, flower pots, and containers.

Couple Cooking

If you have a Granite countertop you feel has a surface that has been compromised, contact a professional to evaluate the surface.

Repairs may include deep cleaning, buffing or reapplying a sealer.

It is essential to follow all of the tips above to ensure your Granite countertop lasts a lifetime.
